your own bodyweight. All of which can be useful. When you use machines, keep in mind that the potential for injury can be greater than from using free weights, at least with some machines, because they put you in a fixed position which could not fit right for you.
When you use free weights, you use additional stabilizer muscles to keep the weight stable while doing the exercise, which you wouldn’t have used doing the exercise in a machine. There are two groups of weight lifting exercises, compound exercises and isolation exercises. When you do compound exercises, more than one muscle group is worked simultaneously. Compound exercises are for example: bench press, rows, pull ups and squats. Doing an isolation exercise only works one muscle group at a time. An isolation exercise is for example: bisep curls, trisep extensions and lateral raises. You should focus on compound exercises primarly, especially if you are a beginner because they are the most effective for fast muscle growth.

1. Deadlift.
Few exercises work as many muscle groups and build muscle as fast as this one. This exercise is the best test of overall body strength. If you would only do one exercise to build muscle, this would be the one. When you do the deadlift you utilize the following muscles: traps, the neck, upper, middle and lower back, hamstrings, glutes quads, forearms, biseps and abs.
2. Squat.

handles or dumbbells.
